Friendsgiving Is Over – Or Is It?
One of our favorite things to do at ACE is delivering gifts to people and charities named in a trust or estate. From November through December, we are like busy elves getting the checks or wires ready to deliver.
Our clients who have passed away are not here to see the joy people have at receiving gifts, but we get to see it sometimes. One of our clients left a large amount to a few friends. We decided to have a little party with one of them. She told us a little about her dear friend.
Non-profit organizations depend on year-end gifts made for tax benefit to the giver, or as part of a legacy estate donation. We are busy getting these delivered during December. The clients we serve have a strong charitable focus – from organizations that help pets, feed children, or bring life-giving health and comfort to the elderly.
Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union’s General Secretary from 1985 – 1991 is famous for seeking to emulate the noble institutions underpinning our capitalistic economy. He knew, better than some, that government can’t do everything and profit-motivated corporations won’t do many things. This leaves a gap. Gorbachev rightly discerned that even more than the institution of democracy, the non-profits fill this gap by offering soul and body sustenance.
